To celebrate World Gin Day 2017 we've put together a list of the ways that gin can benefit your health. All things in moderation of course, but this list could have you feeling a little less guilty next time you reach for a G&T (as if you need a reason anyway!)
As Gin is made from a range of natural ingredients including sage, coriander, nutmeg, rosemary and juniper it is crammed full of antioxidants and naturally medicinal vitamins and minerals.
- It can help to prevent common colds and the flu
Do you suffer from the common cold and flu-like symptoms regularly? Gin may be the solution!
Research has found that the vitamin C present in juniper berries can help to fight off common colds, flus and general winter bugs. It's not going to compete with a good ol' glass of OJ anytime soon but the vitamin C in Juniper Berries is real and certainly knocks every other spirit out of the park.
- Reduce pain in aching joints
Gin could help to reduce the pain and inflammation in your joints so if you suffer from arthritis trying a bit of the spirit may help. There's an old wives remedy of drinking gin-soaked raisins which a huge amount of people have got behind. Check out a more detailed description at http://www.thealternativedaily.com/fact-fallacy-gin-soaked-raisins-really-work-alleviate-pain/
- Improve your overall skin health and keep wrinkles at bay!
That’s right – contrary to what you might think about alcohol negatively impacting on your skin’s health the vitamins in juniper berries have been found to hydrate the skin and leave it feeling soft and supple.
Juniper berries have also been found to prevent wrinkles, so my enjoying a Gin based drink you may be helping to fight the signs of aging too!
- Low sugar content
Providing that you choose a low sugar mixer (tonic water we are looking at you) your tipple will be quite low in sugar.
This is great news for those of us who are conscious about the levels of sugar that our body takes in but don’t want to sacrifice having a drink here and there.
Our favourite low-calorie tonics are:
- Double Dutch Skinny Tonic
- The entire London Essence company Range.
- Franklin and sons light tonic.
- Low in calories
Unlike other alcohol, gin comes in surprisingly low on the calorie scale, which makes it a good choice for those who are keeping an eye on their weight.
At just 97 calories per measure, gin is an ideal substitute for more calorific alcohol such as wine and beer.
- Increase life span
That’s right, gin could possibly increase the length of your life according to research! As the spirit may help improve blood circulation as you get older it could help towards living a longer life.
Do you know about any health benefits we haven’t listed?
If you have experienced some health benefits to drinking Gin we’d love to hear them – and no the warm fuzzy feeling you get when you drink gin doesn’t count!
Wherever you're spending your World Gin Day 2017, have a cracker! From all at One Time Gin 😘
